Nationals!

Nationals! Roughly a week ago, on a Thursday morning, at the crack of dawn, I found myself, along with 15 groggy teammates and five coaches, at Logan airport, awaiting the plane that would take us to Minneapolis en route to Waverly, Iowa, home to Wartburg College and the NCAA Division III Cross-Country Championships. As you may recall from where Maggie left off, our womens team qualified for nationals after placing fourth in New England, while the mens team qualified with a decisive victory. It was less than a week later we found ourselves, at 6:30AM, at the beginning of the end, ready to make the trip wed been preparing for all season. A plane ride and a time zone change later, we found ourselves in Minneapolis: There was snow! Were definitely not in Boston anymore After a three hour drive, we made it to Waverly, just in time to check out the course before the sun set. (Im going to refrain from the obvious commentary on the drive through Iowa-I come from a state that is also occasionally the butt of jokes so I wont go there. Except to say that the radio station we were listening to on our drive down was calledKOWZ.) Thursday night, the team enjoyed a meal at that most venerable of restaurants, the Olive Garden(there is something about the Olive Garden that draws cross-country teams like moths to a flame. Perhaps its because theyve colonized all but the farthest reaches of our nation, inescapable no matter where we travel to. In any case, Ive been to my fair share over the years). Claire 14 and Logan 13 await their pre-race pasta. On Friday we went to the course again, just to give it another going over. This time we made time for a photo op: The ladies at the course on Friday. In case you cant tell, it was pretty cold. Friday night brought the NCAA DIII XC banquet. It gave us an excuse to get all dressed up: The ladies, always classy. The guys. Apparently their outfits were the subject of quite the debate-this is in direct opposition to my previous claim. In any case, I have to say the grey sweaters turned out well. And then, it was Saturday. Meet day! While the craziness (like Maggie talked about at regionals, only MORE) went on around us, and the guys team raced (they got 12th! first New England team!): This is some serious dedication-remember how i said it was COLD? We stayed inside and tried to stay calm: Chilling, or as close as we could get to it, before the race. This was it. I mean, this was IT. All those summer workouts, morning pool sessions, mile repeats, and chocolate milks, and we were finally here. This was why we showed up to practice every day at 5PM. This was why we gladly gave up our Saturdays, our Friday nights. The last chance for us to race together. Our chance to prove that we could survive MIT and succeed at cross-country at the same time. For me, a last race as an Engineer. And what a race it was! The gun went off, and we ran. (Im going to forgo the action shots, because lets face it, nobody looks good when theyre racing). In a race as large as nationals, you cant know what your teammates are doing; the field is so large and so clumped together that all you can do is hope to hear snatches of names as spectators cheer. But every person counts; any opponent you pass can make the difference between being on the podium or off. After a fourth place finish at regionals, only two points behind third, we knew this too well. You also cant always know how youve finished, or how your team has done. As runners stream across the finish line, it is enough to try to find your teammates, to gather your exhausted crew and extract yourselves from the chaos that grows around the chute. So when my parents and teammates and coaches found us, excited and saying something about 4th place, I was mostly confused and a little overwhelmed. But then I looked at the scoreboard: The unofficial results! And it was true! Unofficially, we were fourth! Better than last year, when we had been ranked higher, had had higher expectations going in. It took the length of our cooldown for it to sink in to me-we had made the podium! But that wasnt all-as we were sitting inside Wartburgs gym, waiting for awards, one of our coaches came over and told us that after taking out individual places and recalculating, officially, we were third! Again, I didnt quite believe it. But then the announcer was announcing places and suddenly fourth place was called and no MIT. So third it was! The entire team, plus one very large trophy. The freshman runner friends (now all grown up?) celebrate our last race together. My parents! In high school, my dad never missed a meet and my mom volunteered at every home track meet, so it mean a lot for them to come out to my final race. It was also nice because they took home the stuff that wouldnt fit in my suitcase on the way back (like my hardware). But the day wasnt done. Our tireless coaches drove us all the way back to Minneapolis, where we ate dinner at the Mall of America and celebrated a successful close to the season. (Id like to take a moment here to thank Coach Taylor, Coach H, Coach Paterno, Coach Pete, and Coach Kate. Not only did they drive us all around Iowa and put up with our nonsense all weekend, but they worked harder then we did all season (and didnt even get to race!). They are the reason we had such a good season, and perhaps more importantly, stayed sane while aquajogging. (which is saying a lot!)) The girls team went shopping. (what? theres no Nordstrom in the city!) The guys went on the spongebob roller coaster. And then it was back to Boston. Up early again on Sunday morning, we returned to MIT, proud of our race (if not a little tired). Over the past few decades problems have emerged in regards to the subject of divorce. Most of these problems focus on the notion that divorce is practically a sin and should be considered indissoluble. These absurd conclusions are essentially encouraged since â€Å"[o]ur divorce laws are rooted in the protestant concept of marital sin.† (Ehrlich, p. 174) However, times have changed and the horrendous reputation divorce has received should change right along side the changing times. Henningsenbecame one of Walkers generals and was purely seeking adventure.9 Menwith military experience were very welcomed by Narcisco Lopez and WilliamWalker in their expeditions.10In the west there was a labor surplus of failed min ers from the GoldRush in California.11 One of the most notable was David Deaderick whojoined William Walker on his mission to Nicaragua after failing as a goldminer in California. Deadrick, like many others, used an alternate name. He published his memoirs in the Atlantic Monthly aptly titled Theexperience of Samuel Absolom, Filibuster.12 In his memoir he describesthe increasing class stratifications in California and that men are judgedaccordingly. He was offered land and a large sum to join Walker inNicaragua.13 At the time it was an offer that he could not refuse. Deaderick wanted to prove that inward character counts more thanappearance in determining a mans fate, in a time that there was a crisisin American culture between character and appearance. Robinson led a group of filibusters in to Texasstating that U.S. citizens have a right to migrate where ever they wish andit is beyond the governments power to prevent them.21 Robinson supportedJames Longs later ambitions toward annexing Texas in 1819 when Longlaunched his own filibuster movement in spite of the Adams-Onis Treaty. His contemporaries viewed the treaty as an injustice because it surrenderedAmerican claims to Texas.22It was believed that the inferior cultures of the south were incapableof self-government. John H. Wheeler, U.S. Minister to Nicaragua in 1854,firmly believed that the United States was manifestly destinedtoguide the people of those areas toward decent government and a betterlife.23Many of Walkers men in Nicaragua were Mexican war veterans, andmany were in Central America for all the loot, adventure, liquor andwomen they could find.24 Some of these War Veterans had nothing else todo since the army greatly reduced its size after the Mexican Wars. Enlisted men in the 1850s quickly deserted and joined Walker, Lopez, andQuitman expeditions in Central America for various reasons. Some wereglory seekers and others sought their fortune in the militias. Both Walkerand Quitman expeditions usually offered more money than the military didand offered a plot of land too. These expeditions also offered excitement. During this time of peace in the U.S. the only job for military personnelwas to protect western borders from Native American insurrections. Newspapers at this time had quit glorifying military halts to Indianrevolts and therefore quit glorifying the military. Articles focusedmainly on expansionism in Central America and the filibusters. Some menfound it more appealing to seek glory in the south than to be stationed inthe west watching Indians.25The varying reasons for joining such militias explains the popularityof the movements. The medias involvement in, first honoring filibusterthen denouncing them, made the movements both strong and weak. Thepopularization of the movement first came from the medias portrayal ofglory and riches in the Caribbean. When William Walker finally gainedcontrol of Nicaragua he was considered a hero of the South, only after here-institutionalized slavery. The reestablishment of slavery lost him allhis support in the north and any chance of the U.S. Government torecognized him as president. After the reports of death and famine reachedthe papers and the lost opportunity to purchase Cuba from Sp ain, supportbegan to crumble. The media did play a strong role in motivations, but thatwas not the only factor. We make friends to build a relationship. We get married to establish a relationship in a deeper more permanent manner. † In my opinion, autumn is a wonderful time of the year to connect with strangers, family and friends. It is a time of togetherness; a season of bonding. The weather is usually soggy and cold; we, as humans, want to stay warm and dry. A venture into the elements are rare but can also be a time of bonding. Fall is when hunting season occurs and as a family with friends and sometimes strangers we set off to hunt for the food we put on the table for our families. As most people would not set out into the woods lone to go hunting; into the wilderness with wild animals and the danger of getting turned around and lost. When we go hunting, we gather together as part of a group to bond, and to form a deeper relationship. The winding bumpy ride to our destination proves to be one more advantage point to build a relationship. We are confined to the cabs of our trucks, so metimes for hours. These close quarters allow us to get to know each other even better. When we arrive at our final destination, making a camp is top priority. With the newly formed community coming together to work a team; a common kitchen is formed with ontributions of many. This small tasks brings forth smiles and gratitude and fulfillment. Some of us host the family dinner at our homes. So much love, dedication and joy goes into the labor of preparing this meal. The day starts early and sometimes, the day before as the baking and cooking get started. Everyone from young to old is included in the peeling of the potatoes; washing and cubing the mound that is mashed with butter and milk to fill the bellies of those that create so much joy in our lives. The yams topped with marshmallows and caramelized for a yummy goodness Even the blessing said before the meal is said with a genuine love and filled with gratitude and happiness. Everyone is full; the board games and playing cards are brought out as the women clean after the meal.
